San Francisco Arts Commission exhibition of The After Life of Things
at RayKo Photo Center

As culmination of a fifteen-month San Francisco Arts Commission Individual Artist’s Grant, the RayKo Photo Center will exhibit The After Life of Things: Discarded, Collected, Assembled from December 8, 2016 to January 13, 2017.

The exhibition showcases new work from David’s continuing project made possible by the highly sought-after, bi-annual
Arts Commission grant. The more than twenty pieces in the show are both images of objects and objects themselves, including abstract cameraless images as well as a variety of mural-size assemblages as large as 47″ x 74,” all made by hand
in the darkroom on expired color paper.

The After Life of Things explores the materiality of things and the nature of photographic materials, while celebrating the wonder of the traditional darkroom in an age of its demise.

“Overgrowth” at deCordova Museum includes Clover Tangle
from permanent collection

Drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection and ranging across media from photography to sculpture, “Overgrowth” explores how artists represent prolific growth, expansion and transformation in the natural world and built environment. The exhibition brings together work by more than fifty artists acquired over the past fifty years.

Clover Tangle, from David’s series Nurturing Time, Life in a Backyard Garden, was acquired by deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in 2012. Dedicated to Modern and Contemporary Art since its inception as a public museum in 1950, deCordova is known for innovative exhibitions and programs featuring a wide range of media, especially by artists with a connection to New England.  The permanent collection is especially strong in photography.

DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum is situated on a 35 acre, former private estate just outside of Boston in Lincoln, MA. “Overgrowth” will be on view from April 1 to September 18, 2016.

Klompching Gallery features The After Life of Things for “FRESH 2015”

Gallerists Darren Ching and Debra Klomp Ching have selected David’s project The After Life of Things for their highly anticipated Annual Summer Show and Online Showcase, FRESH.

David’s work will appear on the Gallery’s website along with the work of nine other Finalists: Chris Bennett, Frank Diaz & Deb Young, Mark Dorf, Rhea Karam, Bear Kirkpatrick, William LeGoullon, Peter Leighton, Theresa Ortolani, and Liz Steketee.

The work of five exhibiting artists for FRESH 2015 can be seen at Klompching Gallery in their newly reopened space in Brooklyn from July 8 to August 1, 2015.

“Exposure 2015” at the Photographic Resource Center, Boston

David’s project The After Life of Things has been selected for Exposure 2015 at the Photographic Resource Center, by
juror Kristen Gresh, Estrellita and Yousuf Karsh Assistant Curator of Photographs, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Two of David’s unique assemblages printed on expired color paper are featured in the show, Untitled (Still Life) and
Blue Christmas, No. 1. The exhibition includes the work of thirteen artists, and runs from June 18 to July 24, 2015.

Leaves and Clover to be exhibited at photo basel 2015, inaugural fair

As a Finalist in the FOCUS photo l.a. 2015 competition, David’s series Nurturing Time, Life in a Backyard Garden will be represented by his image Leaves and Clover at the inaugural staging of photo basel. The fair is Switzerland’s first annual international art gathering devoted solely to photography, and will run concurrently with ART Basel, June 17 to 20, 2015.

Leaves and Clover will also be exhibited at pholo l.a. in January, 2016.

Houston Center for Photography publishes interview with David in Spot

Radical Color

Humble Arts Foundation curator Jon Feinstein has selected David’s image Untitled (Stacked TV’s) for Radical Color, exhibited at Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, OR, February 6 to March 30, 2015, and online as HAF’s group show 44.

Untitled (Stacked TV’s) is from the first phase of David’s ongoing project The After Life of Things, which explores the materiality of things and our relationship to them, while celebrating the wonder of the traditional darkroom in an age of its demise.

Radical Color features photographers whose use of subjective color contributes to the current conversation about the nature and materials of photography, as traditional and digital media confront, inform and inspire one another.

Three Exhibitions at The Center for Fine Art Photography

Since its start in 2004, The Center for Fine Art Photography has become one of the most visible and influential promoters of innovative contemporary  photography nationally. A richly diverse calendar of juried, themed exhibitions is curated annually by leading museum professionals, gallerists and photographic artists, and presented at the Center’s galleries in Fort Collins, CO.

In the past year, David’s work has been chosen for three exhibitions at the Center.

Landscapes, curated by Chantel Paul, formerly Assistant Curator at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, features Faded English Lavender Bouquet from the series Nurturing Time, Life in a Backyard Garden.

In Still Life, juror Rebecca Senf, Norton Family Curator of Photography at the Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, has selected Angel Trumpet and Morning Glory from the same series.

An Open themed exhibit includes David’s assemblage Tule, No.1, printed on unexposed, expired paper from the project The After Life of Things, chosen by Shane Lavalette, Director of Light Work, Syracuse, NY.

Aperture Foundation exhibits Blue Christmas in first “Summer Open”

Aperture’s Executive Director, Chris Boot, has selected David’s piece Blue Christmas, No. 1 to be included in Summer Open, the first exhibition of its kind organized by Aperture Foundation.

Designed to reflect “the state of photography now,” an open call for work resulted in 860 submissions from which 97 artists were chosen, representing the theme of “photography itself.”

Aperture’s “Summer Open” is on view from July 17 to August 14, 2014.

Blue Christmas, No.1 is part of David’s ongoing project, The After Life of Things, which explores the unique qualities of expired photo papers to investigate the materiality of things and the nature of photographic materials.

While an artist-in-residence at RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco, David began the first phase of this project by drawing a parallel between discarded objects and discontinued photo papers as found objects. Blue Christmas, No. 1 is made from fifteen unique 5 x 7 prints, printed in the traditional color darkroom on paper dating from the 1980’s to ‘90’s.

the “Readings” section of the June 2014 issue of Harper’s Magazine, on page 21.
